This unique collection is created entirely from car seat belts salvaged from vehicles involved in accidents. I source the materials during visits to places where damaged cars are taken after collisions—ranging from minor fender benders to severe crashes. Each seat belt is carefully selected, removed, and brought to my studio, where it becomes part of a larger narrative.
The process of retrieving these seat belts is a moment of reflection. What happened in this car? What were the circumstances of the accident? Who might have been strapped in with the belt I am now cutting? These questions linger as I handle materials that once saved lives or bore silent witness to tragedy.
In my artworks, the seat belts are woven into intricate networks that symbolize the invisible connections between different accidents. They intertwine human stories, emotions, and the causes of these events—often rooted in human error, carelessness, or irresponsibility. Through each pattern, I aim to convey both the tragedy of these occurrences and their universal lesson.
The dirt, damage, and marks on the seat belts are intentionally left untouched. They lend the artworks a raw authenticity and visceral power. By looking at these pieces, viewers are invited to form an emotional connection with the victims whose stories are reflected in the belts. These artworks challenge us to think deeply about our responsibility on the road—not just for our own safety, but for the safety of others.
The message of this collection is clear: Let your seat belt never become part of such an artwork.
